Today’s story is a little different. I knew, sitting down with my dad, that I was going to be recording, and that I was looking for something special to share. My dad always provides, which is partly what this story is about. The other part is about his mother, my grandma, and the influence she’s had on his life.
Before editing the audio file and recording my small parts, my boyfriend and I felt inspired to create a music track from some throw-away chatter at the start of the file. I present to you, “Normal Human Being (That Would Be Nice”):
Of all the stories my dad tells, this has to be my favorite. It confirms two things I know to be true: that my dad has a serious sweet tooth, and that some rules are meant to be broken. Especially for pie.
After basic training, my dad was sent to Fort Devens, Massachusetts – a training facility of the Army Security Agency – to learn Morse Code. For over five months, starting in August 1968, he was taught to intercept and transcribe code. He talks about his training here.
